Blackstone griddle sizes: 17, 22, 28, and 36

The number in the name is the width of the cooktop. Once you know which one you own, most accessory questions answer themselves.

What the number means

A Blackstone is named for how wide its steel cooktop is in inches. The four common sizes are 17, 22, 28, and 36, and they line up with how many burners sit under the plate: one on the 17, two on the 22 and the 28, four on the 36.

Widths hold across the range even when the rest of the machine changes. That is why accessories are sold by the number rather than by the model year.

Tabletop or cart

The 17 and the 22 are tabletop units in their base form. They sit on a picnic table or a tailgate, they run off the small camping cylinders unless you adapt them, and they pack down for a trunk.

The 28 and the 36 live on a cart with wheels, a shelf, and a full size tank underneath. Both of the small sizes are also sold on folding legs, which matters more than it sounds like it should, because a 22 on legs is a different height and a different silhouette than a 22 on a table even though the cooktop is identical.

Buying a cover for one

This is where the size number stops being enough. Three things change the shape a cover has to clear, and none of them change the cooktop width.

• Hood or no hood. A unit with a folding hood is much taller closed than a bare plate, and a flat cover will not go over it.
• Legs or table. The same cooktop on folding legs needs a cover that reaches the ground, not one that stops at the frame.
• Side shelves. Fixed shelves add width that the cooktop number does not describe.

Fuel is a size question too

Tabletop units are usually plumbed for the one pound camping cylinders. A weekend of cooking burns through those quickly, and the usual fix is an adapter hose that lets a full size barbecue tank feed the small fitting.

Cart models already run a standard tank with a regulator, so the question there is length rather than adaptation. If the tank rides on the cart shelf you need very little hose. If it stands on the ground beside a built in surround, measure the run before you order.

Accessories that do care about the number

Anything that lies on the plate or wraps it is cut to the width: covers, carry bags, and full size grease trays. Anything that touches the plate loosely does not care, which covers scrapers, spatulas, squeeze bottles, and cleaning kits.
